After planting the church in Philippi, Paul, now under house arrest in Rome, writes to encourage the Philippians to advance the gospel with joy in the face of opposition from those outside the church and disunity within. Paul calls them—and us—to persevere, to unite around the gospel, and retain the joy found only in Christ. They, like all believers, are to find Christ-centered, Spirit-empowered joy in living, serving, and sharing. Paul’s goal is simply to honor Christ, and his desire is to represent Christ both in his living and in his dying. May we be challenged to do the same.
